• Introduction to wsunit

  Testing interactions with data providers via Http (e.g. webservices) is an essential thing to ensure the service has not changed it's dataformat or even worse is not reachable at all. In both cases you want to be the first to now and probably be able to fix this before your customer finds out. So you write integration tests and run then as a different job in youe continuous integration environment. So far so good. But then you are as lazy as I am and hate doing work more than once. This is where WSUnit gets handy.

  Packed with a huge number of workshops, hosted by well known speakers like Douglas Crockfort, Christian Johanson, Kore Nordmann or Thorsten Rinne the 1st Edition of the JavaScript Days in cologne already sounds like one of those 'need to be there' events.   When I seriously started with test driven development and had way lesser experience in object oriented programming (OOP) than today, I always thought that this modifiers are more cumbersome than helpful. Over the time I learned about the principles of OOP and realized the necessity of modifiers. But still in terms of unit testing they are sometimes in the way.

  As I am a bit obsessed with testing and unit testing in particular. As I am also a trainer I am trying to watch people on how they do solve different problems in their daily work. Doing this I recognized that almost everyone does not read any documentation nor has the drive to know more about the tools he is using, and stays in his boundaries of knowleadge until someone hits his nose against other possibilities. This is kind of the article is about - getting to know PHPUnit a bit more and be aware of it's nice and problem solving features.

  Sebastian Bergmann und Stefan Priebsch waren so nett und schickten mir ein Exemplar ihres Buches Softwarequalität in PHP Projekten. Es hat mich etwas Zeit gekostet meine Prioritäten so umzuschichten, ihrer Bitte um eine Rezension nachzukommen. Anfang letztes Wochenende habe ich es dann endlich geschafft mir das Buch genauer anzuschauen und durchzulesen. Vorweg: ich bin begeistert und lege es jedem Entwickler wärmstens ans Herz dieses Buch zu lesen.

• PHP Power-Workshop und eine Verlosung

  Ende letzten Jahres habe ich zusammen mit Sascha Kersken mit der Unterstützung von video2brain einen PHP Powerworkshop aufgenommen. Dabei wollten wir uns nicht einfach in die hervorragende Gilde der Videotrainer einreihen, nein, wir wollten was ganz Neues machen. Das Resultat ist ein interaktiver Workshop, in dem Sascha und ich uns über die Neuerungen und Fallstricke von PHP 5.3 unterhalten und so dem Zuschauer mit viel Abwechslung und Spass die behandelten Themenbereiche näher zu bringen.

• Using the console of Symfony2

  The current project I am working on is not the first one depending on an external data sources. It is even not the first one doing it continiously. But for me it is definetly the first one using the Symfony2 framework. Seriously I was surprized how easy it was to implement it loosly and writing tests to ensure its reliability.

• My first video training @video2brain

  Video2brain asked Sascha Kersken and me earlier this year if we are interested in recording a training session, covering topics related to the PHP 5.3 and enhanced software development. I was really flattered and honored and did not hesitate a second to respond. The recording happened the last two weekends and I am really satisfied with te outcome.

• WebTech Conference and IPC 2010 - a wrap up

  Done is done… or I am done conferencing for this year. Since the last conference of this year, the combination of WebTechCon and International PHP conference is done, I am really looking forward to a few days of vacation next week. But before I do want to miss the part where I will tell you about my last conference of this year.
